Most Probably Bare Minimum Requirements

For each of the following tasks and procedures, check off with a T and Mum’s intitials when you have been taught, and M for Mastered with Mum’s initials again when you have demonstrated mastery of each item. If you want to get Dad’s initials, that’s fine – they’re the same as Mum’s!!

CLOTHING CARE

  • Sort dirty washing
  • Stain removal
  • Put washing on
  • Hang washing up to dry
  • Fold and put away clean washing
  • Iron
  • Handwashing
  • Simple mending (tears, patches, buttons)
  • Know how to use a sewing machine
  • Straighten laundry
  • Waterproof shoes and boots
  • Polish shoes and boots

KITCHEN UPKEEP & CLEANING

  • Set table
  • Clear table
  • Put away leftovers
  • Rinse and load dishwasher
  • Clean benches
  • Clean out under sink
  • Empty rubbish bin
  • Take out compost
  • Clean out refrigerator
  • Defrost freezer
  • Set/adjust temperature in fridge/freezer
  • Clean stove top
  • Clean oven
  • Wipe surfaces of appliances and cupboards
  • Operate appliances
  • Arrange cupboards
  • Put away groceries

BATHROOM

  • Clean toilet (inside and out)
  • Clean sink and bench
  • Clean bath
  • Clean shower
  • Clean cupboard and drawers
  • Polish mirror

GENERAL

  • Dust furniture
  • Polish wooden furniture
  • Cobwebs
  • Use broom and dustpan
  • Use vacuum cleaner
  • Change vacuum cleaner bag
  • Shampoo carpet
  • Shake rugs
  • Mop floors
  • Scrub and spot clean walls and doors
  • Empty wastebaskets
  • Clean windowsills
  • Wash windows (inside and out)
  • Clean light fixtures
  • Replace lightbulbs (and understand wattage)
  • Clean fireplace
  • Change bed sheets

Other Possiblities:

  • Take on one of these sets of jobs as your sole responsibility for a predetermined amount of time. We are always open to that kind of discussion!
  • Do cleaning for an elderly or infirm neighbour
  • Run an ironing business

  • Knit clothing for the family
  • Organise a sewing circle
